How do you calculate how much Federal Income Tax is withheld from your weekly paycheck?

Go here: http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=96196,00.html

Purpose of This Computer Program The purpose of this application is to help employees to ensure that they do not have too much or too little income tax withheld from their pay. It is not a replacement for Form W-4, but most people will find it more accurate and easier to use than the worksheets that accompany Form W-4. You may use the results of this program to help you complete a new Form W-4, which you will submit to your employer.

Tips For Using This Program

Have your most recent pay stubs handy.
Have your most recent income tax return handy.
Fill in all information that applies to your situation.
Estimate values if necessary, remembering that the results can only be as accurate as the input you provide.
Consult the information links embedded in the program whenever you have a question.
Print out the final screen that summarizes your input and the results, then use it to complete a new Form W-4 (if necessary), and keep it for your records.
Who Can Benefit From This Application?

Employees who would like to change their withholding to reduce their tax refund or their balance due;
Employees whose situations are only approximated by the worksheets on the paper W-4 (e.g., anyone with concurrent jobs, or couples in which both are employed; those entitled to file as Head of Household; and those with several children eligible for the Child Tax Credit);
Employees with non-wage income in excess of their adjustments and deductions, who would prefer to have tax on that income withheld from their paychecks rather than make periodic separate payments through the estimated tax procedures.
For Special Situations If your situation is among those listed below, you will probably achieve more accurate withholding by following the instructions in Publication 919, How Do I Adjust My Tax Withholding?

If you will be subject to alternative minimum tax, self-employment tax, or other taxes; or
If any of your current jobs will end before the end of the year.

NOTE: The information you provide is anonymous and will only be used for purposes of this calculation. It will not be shared, stored or used in any other way, nor can it be used to identify the individual who enters it. It will be discarded when you exit this program.

Please Help! I’m trying to file my taxes online…?

through the IRS website, but it keeps leading me to a large list of private businesses. I just want to file a simple 1040EZ form. Does anyone know how I can do this SIMPLY and for free through the IRS?

The private businesses are the ones accepted through the IRS for free efiling—that is why they are there on the site! That is the only way to file through the IRS—there is not a direct line—you have to use a tax preparation service. But, you can download a 1040EZ Form off the IRS website and then just manually enter the info and send it in if that’s what you want to do. It’s so much easier just to efile—and if you pick a company that they listed–it will be free if you meet the requirements! It will show you at the end of your return that your balance due is zero.

Repaying tuition $ to parents, question regarding taxes and forms?

Hi all,
I am asking a question regarding re-paying my parents $80,000 that they gave me for graduate school. I would like to start repaying this money in $8000 increments over a 10 month period starting in November 2009.

Since this is a repayment of tuition funds, and not an actual gift, am I going to have to pay gift tax on the amount that I am repaying him? If so, what would the gift tax be on $80,000? What information do I need to have to handle this repayment? My dad doesn’t even know that I plan on paying him back for this tuition money or expect any repayment, so this is a totally informal repayment.

Are there any special forms that I would need to complete with my taxes? Are there any special forms that my parents would need to complete with their taxes?

Any guidance you could give me on this topic is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Since theirs was a gift to you and now you are “gifting them back” you will have a problem. You can only gift $13K to Dad (and $13K to Mom) in one year. If you go over that you will be dipping into your lifetime gift exclusion of $1Million. You’d have to do the form 709.

Federal Tax Returns!!?

I am resident alien, on H1-B Visa. I got married last year in march and my wife joined me in June, on a dependent H4 Visa. What kind of expenses for my wife can I claim as a Tax Deduction??
For ex:
1. Can I claim the flight charges for her travel to the US??
2. She has started her MBA from Spring 2009, but I had to spend money on her exams Like GMAT and TOEFL. Can I claim the exam fees as deductions?
3. Can I claim any medical related expenses like hospital visit co-pays for my wife as deductions?
4. She does not have a Individual Tax Identification Number, so do I have to file my return manually along with the application for an ITIN for my wife??

Thanks for the help

1. No, that’s a personal expense.

2. No, those are never deductible.

3. Yes, subject to the usual 7.5% AGI limitation and the $10,900 Standard Deduction of course.

4. Yes, you must attach the Form W-7 to your paper return, along with apostilled copies of her proof of ID and the joint resident statement (if required) and mail the package to the Austin, TX Service Center. Allow 14 to 16 weeks processing time.

Back in 2008 I Lawsuit filed return.

You can not e-file for 2006 and 2007, but the best site I've found for late charges, is FileLate.com. She seems to have all the calculations for you and it pretty cheap. You can also check wish UncleTax.com that are free of tax returns for 2006 and 2007, when they offer themselves up for a free trial /.
