Hi. If I incorporate or start my business in a state that does not have income tax, then does it matter if I claim any tax deductions for my business? Can I still realize any savings by claiming deductions in these states?

We had about 500.00 worth of damage to our house and property. We were without electricity for two weeks and lived with a generator which cost us about 40.00 a day for fuel. We received no help from FEMA or anyone else. How do I file any of this on my income tax?

I am a working musician with a day job. May music-related expenses be deducted from my entire income tax due or just that pertaining to money generated by music? How much may I deduct?

I’m going to rent out my primary (and only) house for few years, as I’m moving for work to a different state.
How do i deduct the mortgage interest paid and property tax? Do I deduct it from my income tax, as usual? Do I subtract it from the rent income to reduce (or almost eliminate) taxes on the rental income? or maybe both?!
Thanks.

First, I need to explain that I’ve already heard the definition of a tax deduction- "A reduction of total income before the amount of income tax payable is calculated." (So please don’t reply with just a simple definition) What I need to know is how that affects my return. I’ve asked a lot of people and no one can give me a clear answer. I have student loans out and I need to know how (and how much) it would benefit me to claim a deduction based on the interest I paid on them last year. Will the deductions increase the amount of my return or are deductions only necessary if I think I will owe the IRS money? I’m really confused to please answer in simple layman’s terms. Pleaaaaaaaaaase, for my sanity- only answer if you really know what you’re talking about! Thanks

Believe it or not, I don’t understand tax deductions. Why?
You can write off tons of things. Why? Aren’t those costs your responsibility?
So basically you get an income tax. You deduct costs off that income right? But why does the government allow this?

I would like to know if an income tax filer can claim the sales taxes paid on monthly utility bills for the state sales tax deductions for income tax?
