Among those shocked by President Obama’s 2010 budget, the most surprising are the true-blue liberals who run most of America’s nonprofits, universities and charities. How dare he limit tax deductions for charitable giving! They’re afraid they’ll get fewer donations, but they should be more concerned that Mr. Obama’s policies will shove them aside in favor of the New Charity State.
Replys
Against it.
B. Hussein hates charitable giving and has failed to send his brother $5 to repair his hut.
Against.
Another of Buckwheat’s bonehead moves.
Why? its a change, he promised change.
i am for this.
It is a tax raise and a nod toward government control rather than private charity. Democrats should support it, republicans should oppose it. I will have to pay it.
Against
Against it. If it isn’t broken, why fix it? People are more prone to donate if they can get a tax write-off. Since the government loves non-profit organizations oh-so-much, shouldn’t they not even consider such a thing? Is this really an issue or just hearsay?
if you are giving only for the tax deduction are you really giving?
Against. This will decrease the donations to charities and then the charities are going to have to be bailed out by the government. This will increase the entitlement programs which will increase our taxes.
man that suck
the party of big government wants people to rely on government . They benefit when people are impoverished and afraid, because then they can get votes by promising benefits "if the evil republicans don’t stop us". This also accounts for all their activist organizations, which profit by suing industries to death. Like the timber industry.
Obama is obviously limiting these deductions because he wants the donations to go down. Obama does not like the free market to have a hand in solving societies problems, like homelessness, and hunger. Limiting deductions will insure that he could then blame the rich for not caring due to lack of charitable donations.
This is a dirty trick that is worthy of a good Chicago politician. People have short memories, and when these charities report donations down, Obama will claim that the government has to step in to solve these problems.
Against it.
I’m four square against it. But then I’m also against most of the rest of his (published) agenda on the white house website.
It’s plainly obvious to me that economics were not what he ever took the time to study and he’s not even listening to what his friend Buffett is telling him.
Tho he promised tax cuts to some 90% of the populous, all the "changes" he wants to push through will guarantee us higher taxes on goods and services, as well as commodities, such as the energy for our homes and fuel for our vehicles. (Cap and Trade)
You can’t tell me this won’t affect the whole of our population. When the winter of 2010 comes and your heating bills are twice what they historically have been, be sure to send your Thank You notes to him! After all, we’ll ALL be paying the price for instituting the "change."
Sounds like he is against giving to charity, unless he has control. He doesn’t have a problem forking over money that isn’t his to banks and losers who lied on their mortgage apps to take out loans they can’t afford.
I am a fiscal conservative, but the currently operative answer would be that "Only the Government knows who is most in need; and all volunteerism and charity are now mandatory edicts of the State."
NO I am not, I say let people give to charity, at least we have a better idea of where our money is going more than in government who may blow it ridding the country of the smell of pigs feces.
I think you need to look more carefully at the "article" in which you have referenced.
This is not a discussion of charity at all, but not terribly well-reasoned or intellectually honest opinion. What it truly complains about is the increase of the tax rates for the wealthiest Americans.
Only the sloppiest and/or most morally dishonest individual would suggest that this is an attack on charity.
Cheers.
P.S. Not a Dem or a Rep–just someone who can read past overheated partisan rhetoric.
Does Obama have ANY idea of how the system works at all?
This is another one of his really, really stupid ideas.
Who in the world ever started the rumor that this guy is smart.
Charitable giving is an important part of the educational and social structure in the US, as well as providing a safety net for millions each year in a way that the government is incapable of matching.
When someone is really in need, the last thing they need or want to hear is "I’m from the government and I’m here to help you. Now fill out this form."
I am a moderate.
Obama is a radical left-wing idiot.
I don’t think this is a conservative vs liberal thing. I am against this as it is the most inhuman policy a government could pursue without gas chambers. This goes beyond mean and cruel and straight to evil. This will hurt millions of people in a bad time. This will cause the suffering and death of Americans. I can’t understand how a college graduate would not understand the grave consequences of such an irresponsible act. All I can say is WTF where you thinking Obama.
Trace, My condolences on your loss but consider how much money will not go to that very much needed research. I will still donate but the big money from corporations will not be there.
either way, i will still contribute to my chosen charity. i don’t give for the tax deduction. i give in the hope that a cure will be found for breast cancer. i give because my mother passed from breast cancer almost 16 years ago. miss you mom.
*point taken penguin. but charity is just that. and when you give for a tax deduction, then it’s not charity. there are plenty of tax deductions for businesses to tap. i was a small business owner myself. we can only hope that, perhaps, the government will wake up and realize that the pharmaceuticals are in it for the money, not a cure. let’s hope and pray our government will take an interest in a more worthy cause than the marsh mouse, eh?
The artcle said it – The New Charity State. Deductions or not, why give when the Fed’s going to take your money & spend it where it shouldnt anyway?
AGAINST, IT IS INSANITY! CHARITIES DEPEND UPON OUR FREE WILL TAX DEDUCTIBLE DONATIONS!
Change? A tax deduction is not my reason for recycling!
