Is there a special tax deduction for new cars purchased in 2009?

I purchased a new Malibu on December 30, 2009. Was there a special government incentive that involved a tax deduction?

you get to add the sales to your standard deduction, this is the only special benefit for those who are not able to itemize(Sch L)
and if you are in a state that has no sales tax, the excise tax and any based on the value of the car are are deductible

Technically, no. There was a special tax deduction for sales tax paid on new cars purchased during a certain time period, but not for the actual purchase, just for the sales tax.

Generally you are able to deduct any state or local sales taxes or excises taxes for a new car purchased in 2009. If you itemize deductions, you claim the deduction on Schedule A. If you do not itemize deductions, you can increase your standard deduction by filing Schedule L.

Yes, if you take the standard deduction, you can add the sales tax for the car to your normal standard deduction. Use schedule L to calculate it.
