The New Jersey Tax on Plastic Surgery
New Jersey plastic surgeons felt they were scrapped when the NJ State a law elective plastic surgery Services are taxed passed in 2004. No other state in the United States allowed taxes for each type of medical procedure is collected.
The law the 2004 tax plastic and cosmetic surgery was passed in New Jersey as an attempt to raise funds in the state. Originally, this law bring with them in more than 25 million U.S. dollars in its first year. The tax is not quite as planned, and only end up pulling in about $ 7,000,000 in tax matters, fees for services provided by NJ plastic surgeon made available.
Governor John McGreevy signed the bill into law, and it sounded fairly reasonable at the time. The law states that only "certain cosmetic medical procedures, which are directed at improving the appearance of the patient and not the proper function of the body or the prevention or treatment of disease or illness. "
This means you pay tax on to a merely cosmetic services, but not a single operations You improve your physical health. So a new Jersey plastic surgeon can a nose job to help you breathe better and you pay no tax on the service. If, however, leads one New Jersey plastic surgeon breast augmentation for cosmetic reasons, then this service is subject to the appropriate sales tax.
The law, the text contains a number of elective cosmetic surgery procedures, which are subject to tax. Among the procedures that are now New Jersey Taxes any form of cosmetic surgery, cosmetic injections, cosmetic soft tissue fillers, hair transplants, dermabrasion and chemical peels, laser hair removal, laser Skin resurfacing, laser treatment of leg veins, sclerotherapy and cosmetic dentistry.
This tax was supposedly the first time that a tax on every medical operation imposed in the United States. New Jersey plastic surgeons were obviously not happy about this and many complained that this tax would continue to force people to go to other countries for their medical needs. Many plastic and cosmetic surgery in New Jersey said in the media, if the tax was introduced.
While this is only a phenomenon, New Jersey So far it has attracted the interest of legislators in other states. States like Texas, Illinois, Washington, Arkansas, Tennessee and New York have adopted all the bills to tax certain cosmetic surgery procedures, but so far none of the new laws passed.
has the primary sponsor of the bill, Joseph Cryan, since attempts to repeal the law, but given the repeal Not enough votes.
Only time will tell whether the tax is repealed, the books remain in the future. For now, NJ cosmetic and plastic surgeons are to do with that tax, what they can.
